SUMMARY:Community Ski Challenge 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Higley Flow are inviting cross-country skiers (young and old) to join a ski event on January 30th – February 1st. (Please note that this is a new date due to a postponement on account of frigid tempuratures forecast for the weekend of January 25th)   Our goal is to see if we as a community of Higley skiers can ski 1) 145 miles across the North Country; 2) 325 miles across New York State; 3) maybe making 950 miles to Wisconsin and the start of the American Birkebeiner (first ski loppet in the US)\, or 4) 2\,190 miles to Yellowstone and more great skiing.  (It may take us more than a year to make it to Yellowstone\, but it’s a big country). \n\n\n\nWe want each skier to record the miles they skied daily over these three days on a poster-sized spreadsheet in the Higley Lodge.  If you cannot track your miles electronically\, we have a chart with trail names and distances to help.  Our goal is see how many skiers appreciate skiing Higley Trails and with our good imaginations can dream we are skiing across New York and the U.S.  \n\n\n\nThis is the fourth year of the Community Ski Challenge and we hope to beat last years’ record of 826 miles. Many skied multiple times resulting in 180 entries over the 3-day event. JOIN US.

SUMMARY:Adult Nordic Ski Lessons
DESCRIPTION:Assuming the snow continues\, the Friends will offer Nordic ski lessons again this year. Our working model for lessons is to offer 4 consecutive Sunday sessions from 1:30 – 3:00pm — starting on January 11th.  The first lesson is free to let people see what it is like without committing.  On January 18th\, interested skiers must donate $30 for the remaining 3 lessons.  It is a bargain and we do not prorate missed lessons.  \n\n\n\nWe offer 3 levels of instruction.  I lead the true beginner skiers (Neophytes)\, those who have  never tried Nordic skiing more than some shuffling in the woods\, and don’t know technique.  Jenny Townsend teaches the second level.  These Advanced Beginners have skied for a while but may not have good technique or are not comfortable going down the bigger Higley hills.  Intermediates are coached by Bob Platte and are comfortable going down any of the Higley hills (even Raquette Ridge\, albeit slowly).  And most importantly\, intermediates can ski up the big road-hill and keep up with their classmates! \n\n\n\nThe first two lessons use classic technique for all levels.  If there is interest\, we offer skate skiing instruction for lessons 3 and 4 at the intermediate level.   \n\n\n\nAnd finally\, for you good and devoted Higley skiers\, we are always looking for assistant coaches.  And\, I’m hoping last year’s assistant coaches will continue to volunteer.  Jenny and I already know we each will miss one Sunday\, and we need substitutes as well as those who just want to help.  Trust me\, it is very rewarding to give back to the sport we love\, by helping others improve their technique.  CONTACT ME if interested and THANK YOU\, in advance. \n\n\n\nDanielle Jerry \n\n\n\nnordicmasters@higleyfriends.org
