SUMMARY:Fall Trail's Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Higley Flow State Park anticipate a robust winter season this year. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing the trails at Higley are a way for families to get outside in the fresh\, crisp air of the winter months. \n\n\n\nIn preparation for the season\, the Friends will host a trails day at the Park from 9:00 A.M. to approximately 1:00 P.M. on Saturday\, November 1st. The purpose of the workday is to put the trails in the Park into top shape for winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. \n\n\n\nMuch work which required machinery has been done over the summer and fall months by Park staff. What remains is the final dressing up and light trimming on the trails. \n\n\n\n Those volunteering\, with the capability to do so\, are asked to download\, print and complete a volunteer waiver (PDF) and optional Photo Release (PDF) beforehand. When entering the Park\, volunteers will stop at the camping toll booth\, where the waivers will be collected. Those who can’t complete a waiver ahead will be given one to complete in their vehicle. Volunteers needing to complete one onsite are asked to bring a pen. \n\n\n\nThere will be a group picture this year and volunteers are encouraged to take some candid photos to share. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes\, and may want to wear work gloves. The Park has some tools for volunteers to use\, but volunteers may also bring their own loppers\, rakes\, etc. \n\n\n\nA list of jobs needing completing will be posted on the website and Facebook page. Volunteers can identify the area they wish to work on when handing in their waivers. The attendant will tell them where to go to get instructions and equipment for their area.

SUMMARY:Community Ski Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Community Ski Challenge is a virtual event (started during the pandemic) where Higley cross-country skiers record the miles they ski in a weekend.  The goal is to highlight the North Country skiers who appreciate winter and love a cold-weather test to see how many skiers and how far all skiers’ miles can stretch across the northern U.S.  In 2023\, 90 participants virtually skied across New York State (325 miles).  \n\n\n\nThe Friends of Higley Flow invite North Country Nordic skiers (young\, collegiate\, and older) to join the Community Ski Challenge on Friday\, February 7 through Sunday\, February 9.  With the great snow this year\, we hope to out-do our past record and ski (virtually) to Wisconsin where the American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon will race its 52nd year. With 950 miles between South Colton and Hayward\, WI\, it will be a test of how many skiers we can entice and how far they each ski. \n\n\n\nWe need each skier to record the miles they skied daily over these three days on a poster-sized spreadsheet in the Higley Lodge. If you cannot track your miles electronically\, we have a chart with trail names and distances to help.  Higley Friends want to demonstrate how many skiers are using the groomed Higley Trails and with our good imaginations can dream we are skiing across the U.S.  \n\n\n\nQuestions: nordicmasters@higleyfriends.org

SUMMARY:Adult Nordic Ski Lessons
DESCRIPTION:Once again Higley will offer Adult Nordic Ski Lessons The Friends of Higley Flow Park want adults to have fun on the snow and after a gorgeous white Christmas\, we will again sponsor cross-country ski lessons for those wanting to learn to ski or to enjoy the sport more by improving your technique while meeting other skiers. Starting January 19th\, a series of 4 consecutive Sunday lessons is planned from 1:30 till 3 pm. The first lesson is free and you can register for three additional lessons for $30.  Lessons are based on a web-based program developed by Nordic Ski Lab in Calgary\, Alberta\, only with real-live Higley skiers coaching you! This year several additional experienced skiers have volunteered to help coach. We can now offer skate skiing in the last 2 lessons of the intermediate group. Please note in your registration if you are interested in this and if you have skate skis. Some rental skate skis are available at the Higley HQ\, but you should check available sizes in advance. Rental skis are available at the Higley Flow State Park headquarters before the lesson for beginners or those without skis for only $7 per adult. If you are interested in pre-registering for lessons\, helping coach\, or just more information please contact me at nordicmasters@higleyfriends.org and I will add you to our mailing list.  Or just keep an eye on the Friends of Higley Flow website higleyfriends.org or Facebook page.     Danielle Jerry907-231-1332nordicmasters@higleyfriends.org

SUMMARY:Fall Trail's Day (Archive 2024)
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Higley Flow State Park anticipate a robust winter season this year. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing the trails at Higley are a way for families to get outside in the fresh\, crisp air of the winter months. \n\n\n\nIn preparation for the season\, the Friends will host a trails day at the Park from 9:00 A.M. to approximately 1:00 P.M. on Saturday\, November 2nd. The purpose of the workday is to put the trails in the Park into top shape for winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. \n\n\n\nMuch work which required machinery has been done over the summer and fall months by Park staff. What remains is the final dressing up and light trimming on the trails. \n\n\n\nThose volunteering\, with the capability to do so\, are asked to download\, print and complete a volunteer waiver (PDF) beforehand. Waivers will be available for download. \n\n\n\nTrails Day Project: \n\n\n\n-Someone to man toll booth until 10:00A.M.   -Wood chips spreading on Warm Brook-Signage: put out winter trail maps-one crew for each side of the road 2 people each side maps and 2 staplers with staples\, backpacks to carry maps and staplers \n\n\n\n-Put out road signs \n\n\n\n-Go into woods along Warm Brook where spindly beech trees lean in and trim them out (SLU Team) loppers\, hand saw\, pole saw-  \n\n\n\n-Trim edge of Overlook paralleling Park driveway \n\n\n\nOn these trails-pick up branches and trim back edges:E-Z\, Warm Brook\, Beaver Pond\, Wood’s trail trim and pick up as much as possible\, Toadstool\, Cedar Brook\,Raquette Ridge  \n\n\n\n-Clean in lodge and man the refreshments for workers   \n\n\n\n-Take a step ladder\, cover solar panel on trail lights on E-Z and identify which ones and how many need replacement.
