SUMMARY:Fall Trail's Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Higley Flow State Park anticipate a robust winter season this year. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing the trails at Higley are a way for families to get outside in the fresh\, crisp air of the winter months. \n\n\n\nIn preparation for the season\, the Friends will host a trails day at the Park from 9:00 A.M. to approximately 1:00 P.M. on Saturday\, November 1st. The purpose of the workday is to put the trails in the Park into top shape for winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. \n\n\n\nMuch work which required machinery has been done over the summer and fall months by Park staff. What remains is the final dressing up and light trimming on the trails. \n\n\n\n Those volunteering\, with the capability to do so\, are asked to download\, print and complete a volunteer waiver (PDF) and optional Photo Release (PDF) beforehand. When entering the Park\, volunteers will stop at the camping toll booth\, where the waivers will be collected. Those who can’t complete a waiver ahead will be given one to complete in their vehicle. Volunteers needing to complete one onsite are asked to bring a pen. \n\n\n\nThere will be a group picture this year and volunteers are encouraged to take some candid photos to share. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes\, and may want to wear work gloves. The Park has some tools for volunteers to use\, but volunteers may also bring their own loppers\, rakes\, etc. \n\n\n\nA list of jobs needing completing will be posted on the website and Facebook page. Volunteers can identify the area they wish to work on when handing in their waivers. The attendant will tell them where to go to get instructions and equipment for their area.

SUMMARY:Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Higley Flow State Park and the April 8th Solar Eclipse \nHigley Flow State Park will be open to the public for day use from 8:00A.M. to Sunset on Apr. 8th as it is every day of the year. The beach is an ideal spot for viewing the eclipse. The Park has a limited number of free glasses to offer those in attendance.\nThere is a playground\, a pavilion\, and several charcoal grills in the beach area. There is no water down at the beach and in the campground area this time of year\, as buildings are not heated and it is too cold to activate underground water lines. Water and two bathrooms are available at the Nature Center/Lodge and the two more at the Main Office. There is no camping at the Park until Victoria Day weekend.\nAttendees are invited to enjoy the amenities the Park has to offer while respecting its beauty by carrying out what was carried in. Park employees will be on hand to answer questions and offer any assistance needed.

SUMMARY:Night Skiing
DESCRIPTION:Flat grooming went better than expected. All the normally groomed woods trails except Warm Brook and Raquette Ridge are flat groomed with adequate coverage. E-Z and New Pine in particular are groomed wide enough for skate skiing. There is a semblance of trackset on the very edge of the road down as far as the old nature center. The road was already opened up and while covered is not skiable. \nEnjoy another night of skiing from 6 until 8:00 P.M.

DESCRIPTION:UPDATED\, Again! \nAssuming we get snow as forecast\, we should have good trail conditions to host our 3rd Annual Community Ski Challenge at Higley starting Friday\, February\, 23 through Sunday\, February 25. The goal of the Community Ski Challenge is for Higley skiers to record the distance they ski on these dates. We want to track how many miles we as a community of skiers can cover on a weekend at Higley. The Challenge is for all ages and ski abilities. There will be a large spread sheet posted at the Lodge with a chart listing trail segment distances. We will total miles skied each day of the event and with enough participants we may be able to virtually ski across New York State – 325 miles\, or maybe even farther. Come join us and ski that weekend at Higley. \nDanielle Jerry \nnordicmasters@higleyfriends.org

SUMMARY:Night Skiing
DESCRIPTION:Your host for skiing tonight will be Lauren Diamond-Brown. We have suspended grooming until temperatures cool. There are bare spots appearing\, particularly in the track sets. Skiing tonight would best be done before total darkness and outside the trackset. We are not on the trails so cannot evaluate how many bare spots are out there. Some had appeared on E-Z and Overlook late yesterday afternoon. The roads should have the best coverage. Grooming with the Tucker compresses the surface and tends to preserve it better than our lighter equipment.

SUMMARY:Youth Ski - Ermines
DESCRIPTION:Ermine Families\,\nWinter has been a challenge this year! I think cooler temps tonight will help freeze up what snow we have left at Higley. Hopefully we can have practice today at 1:00 pm (Saturday\, Feb. 3rd). If I hear from the Friends group that we cannot ski I’ll let everyone know\, but for now I’m planning to have a ski for the kids at 1:00 this afternoon.\nThe Nicandri 5Km event tomorrow morning is also a little iffy- they’re planning a snowshoe/run\, but aren’t planning to groom for skiing. Please watch the Facebook pages for updates.\nHope to see you this afternoon!\nJenny

SUMMARY:Night Skiing
DESCRIPTION:Blanche Towne will be your host for skiing tonight until 8:00 P.M. Skiing is better than expected for the weather we have had. E-Z was track set this morning. The track set on the roads has been flat groomed. The best skiing on the roads is following that path. The camp loops have also been flat groomed. There is some ice on all the loops. The roads have a few patches\, but not much. Skiers are still skiing the woods trails on the existing trackset.

SUMMARY:Night Skiing
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Townsend is your host for evening skiing. Conditions today and this evening will be firm and fast. Marty Duffany is attempting to flat groom the roads and to track set the upper E-Z loop closest to the lodge. Snowshoes will be a good choice tonight\, most skiers may prefer the E-Z trail or Overlook. If you are a skate skier who likes to fly\, tonight may be good but be aware that grooming will not remove many of the ruts and there may be icy patches in the low spots. \n For general info about night skiing.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED! Skiing with the Saints
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, South Colton received more rain that we did in the Canton/Potsdam area the past few days\, so the ski conditions at the park are poor and the snow cannot be groomed at this time.\nTherefore\, we are choosing to postpone the Ski with a Saint event until conditions improve.\nDo your snow dances!\nJenny \nPOSTPONED: Please join the Varsity Nordic Ski Team on Saturday as they lead cross-country ski games and activities for kids on snow. Athletes are also willing to offer a FREE adult cross country ski lesson- contact Ethan Townsend (etownsend@stlawu.edu) by Friday at noon to reserve a spot. \nSki rentals are available at the park on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Fall Trail's Day
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Higley Flow State Park anticipate a robust winter season this year. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing the trails at Higley are a way for families to get outside in the fresh\, crisp air of the winter months. \nIn preparation for the season\, the Friends will host a trails day at the Park from 9:00 A.M. to approximately 1:00 P.M. on Saturday\, November 4th. The purpose of the workday is to put the trails in the Park into top shape for winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. \nMuch work which required machinery has been done over the summer and fall months by Park staff. What remains is the final dressing up and light trimming on the trails. \n Those volunteering\, with the capability to do so\, are asked to download\, print and complete a volunteer waiver beforehand. Waivers are on the group’s website: www.higleyfriends.org . When entering the Park\, volunteers will stop at the camping toll booth\, where the waivers will be collected. Those who can’t complete a waiver ahead will be given one to complete in their vehicle. Volunteers needing to complete one onsite are asked to bring a pen. \nThere will be a group picture this year and volunteers are encouraged to take some candid photos to share. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes\, and may want to wear work gloves. The Park has some tools for volunteers to use\, but volunteers may also bring their own loppers\, rakes\, etc. \nA list of jobs needing completing will be posted on the website and Facebook page. Volunteers can identify the area they wish to work on when handing in their waivers. The attendant will tell them where to go to get instructions and equipment for their area.
